Process of Court Marriage in Guwahati

Step 1: Online Application through RTPS Assam

The process begins with filing an online application through the RTPS Assam portal. The applicant must accurately complete the marriage registration form and upload all the required documents.

Step 2: Upload Supporting Documents

After completing the application form, both parties must upload the prescribed documents, including identity proof, address proof, age proof, passport-size photographs, and other documents required under the Special Marriage Act.

Step 3: Payment of Government Fees

Once the documents are uploaded successfully, the prescribed government fee must be paid online. After payment, an RTPS Acknowledgement Receipt containing a unique application number is generated for future reference.

Step 4: Verification by the Sub-Registrar Office

The concerned Sub-Registrar Office in Guwahati verifies the application and supporting documents. If any discrepancy is found, the applicants may be asked to provide additional information or corrected documents.

Step 5: Approval of Application

After successful verification of all uploaded files and proof of residence, the marriage application is formally approved by the Marriage Officer.

Step 6: Mandatory 30-Day Notice Period

Following approval, a statutory 30-day public notice is issued under the Special Marriage Act. The marriage notice is displayed at the concerned Sub-Registrar Office and is also available on the RTPS portal.

This notice period allows any person to raise objections, if legally permissible. If no valid objection is received within 30 days, the marriage can proceed.

Step 7: Book Appointment

After the expiry of the mandatory 30-day notice period, the couple can book an appointment through the RTPS portal or visit the concerned Sub-Registrar Office in Guwahati for the solemnization of marriage.

Step 8: Appearance Before the Marriage Officer

On the scheduled date, both the bride and groom must appear personally before the Marriage Officer along with three witnesses carrying their original identity documents.

The Marriage Officer verifies the identities of all parties and witnesses before proceeding with the marriage.

Step 9: Solemnization of Marriage

The marriage is solemnized in the presence of the Marriage Officer. Both parties declare that they voluntarily accept each other as husband and wife, and the marriage register is signed by the bride, groom, witnesses, and the Marriage Officer.

Step 10: Issue of Marriage Certificate

Upon completion of all legal formalities, the Marriage Officer issues the official Marriage Certificate, which serves as conclusive legal proof of marriage throughout India and internationally.
